The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division confirmed Tuesday evening that it is investigating a death at an apartment complex near Colonial Life Arena.
SLED said it was asked by the University of South Carolina Police Department to assist with an on-campus death that occurred earlier Tuesday. Authorities have not released details about the individual involved or the circumstances surrounding the death.
The investigation prompted temporary road closures in the area surrounding the arena. According to Gamecock Athletics, Lincoln Street was shut down between Blossom and Devine streets while law enforcement conducted its work at the scene.
Officials emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to public safety. A spokesperson for SLED described the case as an “active and ongoing investigation,” adding that additional information may be released as the inquiry continues.
University and law enforcement officials did not provide a timeline for reopening affected streets or for when further updates might be available. The area near Colonial Life Arena remained under police activity Tuesday evening as investigators worked to determine the circumstances of the death.
